In March, 2012 there was a fire in the ancient Polish abbey which is situated in Sokal, Lviv Region. The roof and the dome are destroyed and the walls are also damaged. The abbey has a great historical and cultural value for Ukrainians and Polish people. It was built in the 16th century by the initiative of the monk Bernard Avelides and the Polish king Sigizmund II. In 1951 the abbey was reorganized as a prison. Now the citizens of Sokal and the representatives of Poland want to restore the abbey and reorganise it as the abbey again.
